PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY
In International Prayer Shawl Ministry began at a Women’s Leadership
Institute in Hartford, CN in 1998.
Two women were knitting shawls, one for a cancer patient and one for a new
mother.
Others began knitting, and the ministry was born.
In March 2006, Janet Bean attended a Quiet Day at Trinity Cathedral, learned
about the Prayer Shawl Ministry, and brought the idea to St. John’s.
A meeting date was announced and on May 16, Janet, Mary Dorscheimer, Doris
Gleason, Elizabeth Draper, Sally Ann Wells, and Rose Colette met in the
Ladehoff Room.
In the presence of God, they began to knit. Since then, Dcn. Julie Jensen,
Barbara Aleskus, Julie Powers, Mary Lawrence, Pat Fritz and Celia Gumm have
joined the group.
They meet at 2 PM on 2nd Tuesdays of the month.
Many shawls have been created and given to people inside or outside of the
parish. They are knit and crocheted with specific people in mind and also
gathered for future unknown recipients.
Some are given in times of grief or illness, some for celebrations such as
births and birthdays, parish comings and parish leavings.
All shawls are a union of skill and grace.
